The Center for Global Education staff are not experts on 529 Plans and how they can be used. A 529 Plan is a tax-advantaged savings plan designed to encourage saving for future education costs. 529 Plans, legally known as “qualified tuition plans,” are sponsored by states, state agencies, or educational institutions and are authorized by Section 529 of the Internal Revenue Code.
So – the big question: Can you use your 529 Plan to cover study abroad expenses? The answer is probably! The rules determining plan use and fund withdrawal capabilities vary from state to state. You will need to speak with your 529 provider and Butler Financial Aid about whether you can apply your 529 Plan funds to study abroad, as well as consult your 529 Plan requirements to learn for what your funds can be used.
