Residential-Learning Communities (RLC)
Residential-Learning Communities (RLCs) are specialized living environments that connect students inside and outside of the classroom. Each RLC is unique, but all are centered on a distinctive theme or academic major. Students who choose to live in an RLC have a direct connection to their classroom experience; opportunities for co-curricular programs and trips; and dedicated faculty and staff who work to make the community a success.
Why choose an RLC?
RLCs are an ideal way to make friends with peers who have similar interests or academic majors. Research shows that students who participate in an RLC have higher academic success rates, higher college graduation rates, and higher levels of satisfaction with their college experience, and an easier time connecting with their peers (Association of American Colleges and Universities, 2010). On Butler’s campus, students who participate in RLCs feel more connected on-campus, feel more academically supported, and are offered more opportunities to connect with peers in their residential community.
What RLCs are Available?
Currently there are two Residential-Learning Communities available: the Health and Wellness RLC and the Honors RLC.
Join a community of future health care providers. As a member of this community you’ll explore your own health and wellness as we engage in co-curricular activities that will increase your understanding of yourself and your wellbeing as well as give you foundational knowledge for your future career. As a member of this community, you will participate in the PX 210/BSHS 210: Topics in Health & Wellness: Building a Better Bulldog. This course fulfills Pharmacy and BSHS degree requirements and allows you to explore relevant and contemporary issues in nutrition, physical wellbeing, and personal health. This program strives to provide you with unique learning experiences through the Faculty-in-Residence initiative, co-curricular programming, special trips, and foundational coursework for future health-care providers.
How To Apply: We encourage Pharmacy and BSHS students to find their home for 2021–2022 in the Health & Wellness Living-Learning Community. To apply, select the Health & Wellness RLC as one of your housing preferences on the Residential-Learning Community page in the housing portal. If selected for the community, you will be required to take the PX 210/BSHS 210 Topics in Health & Wellness: Building a Better Bulldog with Dr. Gervasio in fall 2021.
Join a community of peers who are curious about the world and seek to expand their intellectual endeavors beyond the classroom. This interdisciplinary program strives to provide you with unique learning opportunities through our Faculty-in-Residence initiative.
How To Apply: If you have been accepted into the Butler Honors Program, you are encouraged to select the Honors Residential-Learning Community as your home for 2024–2025. To apply, simply select the Honors Residential-Learning Community as your top housing preference on the Residential-Learning Community page in the housing portal. Please note: if you select a roommate preference, that roommate must also be in the Honors Program and opt into the Honors RLC. If you don’t have a roommate preference, Residential Life will be happy to pair you with another newly-accepted Honors Program student. If you request a roommate who is not eligible to live in the Honors RLC, the Honors RLC will take priority over the roommate request.
The online housing application and dining plan selection process for incoming fall 2024 first-year and transfer students will begin at 4:00 PM ET on March 15, 2024.
